  • Trickling Filters: It consists of an enclosed tank with a bed of bricks and a layer of microorganisms. Wastewater is passed in the tank and trickles over the bed of stones or plastic, resulting in the removal of solid particles, and sludge formation.

3. Tertiary Treatment

Typically, wastewater is considered to be clean after secondary treatment. However, tertiary treatment ensures a higher quality of sewage before releasing it into the water bodies. This stage includes:

  • Filtration: The remaining particles in the sewage are removed with the filtration process that is done through sand filters, carbon filters, or membrane filtration.
  • Chemical Treatment: Chlorine or ozone chemicals are added to disinfect the water and kill the pathogens.
  • Nutrient Removal: This is used to remove the large amount of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the water. 

4. Sludge Management

Sludge is a by-product that is produced during the primary and secondary treatment. Thus, along with waste management, managing sludge is also very important to avoid a negative impact on the environment. The process includes:

  • Thickening and Dewatering: In the process of managing sludge, it is made thick to reduce the volume and it is done by removing the excess water. 
  • Anaerobic Digestion: Once the sludge is thickened, then it is introduced to anaerobic digestion. In this organic products are broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen, leading to the production of biogas (energy source) and stabilized sludge. 
  • Composting: The stabilized sludge can be easily used as a fertilizer and can be disposed of in landfills. Before using it as a fertilizer, make sure that it meets the safety standards.

5. Water Reuse and Recycling

The need for freshwater can be decreased by reusing treated effluent for different non-potable (non-drinking water) uses.
